The history of the Gomel State Medical University dates back to 1990, when the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the BSSR dated November 14, 1990 № 284 and the order of the Minister of Health of the BSSR dated November 20, 1990 № 188, in order to ensure the training of doctors and specialists of higher qualifications for the most affected areas of the state 

The university organized an educational process at 5 faculties: medical; medical diagnostic; faculty of foreign students; pre-university training; advanced training and retraining. More than 3857 students, graduate students, clinical residents study at the university, including 750 foreign citizens from 29 countries of the world receive education in Russian and English.

Education at the university is practical-oriented and organized in 38 departments, of which 22 – are clinical, as well as in a training center for practical training and simulation training equipped with modern simulation equipment. 

19 large clinics equipped with modern equipment, on the basis of which training is taking place, as well as the Gomel University Clinic – the regional hospital of disabled people of the Great Patriotic War, the professor advisory center, the research laboratory, the industry laboratory of personalized medicine, the information and publishing center, etc.

The purpose of education is the formation of a diversified, morally mature, creative personality of a student.

Education is based on universal, humanistic values, cultural and spiritual traditions of the Belarusian people, state ideology, reflects the interests of the individual, society and the state.

The main components of education are:

  • civic and patriotic education aimed at the formation of an active civic position, patriotism, legal, political and information culture;
  • ideological education aimed at the formation of knowledge of the foundations of the ideology of the Belarusian state, instilling in the younger generation of fundamental values, ideas, beliefs that reflect the essence of Belarusian statehood;
  • moral education aimed at introducing universal and national values;
  • aesthetic education aimed at the formation of aesthetic taste, the development of a sense of beauty;
  • education of a culture of self-knowledge and self-regulation of the individual, aimed at creating the need for self-development and social interaction, psychological culture;
  • education of a culture of a healthy lifestyle, aimed at the formation of healthy lifestyle skills, awareness of the importance of health as a value, physical improvement;
  • gender education aimed at creating ideas about the role and life purpose of men and women in modern society;
  • family education aimed at creating a value attitude towards the family and raising children;
  • labor and professional education aimed at understanding labor as a personal and social value, awareness of professional choice, social significance of professional activity;
  • environmental education aimed at creating a value attitude towards nature;
  • fostering a culture of safe life, aimed at creating safe behavior in social and professional activities, everyday life;
  • the education of a culture of life and leisure, aimed at the formation of a student’s value attitude to the material environment, the ability to use free time efficiently and effectively.
